My friend needed a head shot and I decided to set up her session outside in my back yard since it was a beautiful day and also plenty of space to move around. As a portrait photographer, I photograph my clients everywhere and anywhere. I personally do love outside sessions only when the backgrounds don’t fall and lately, they always fall. Trust me bricks don’t help. While our mutual friend was placing makeup on her face, her 13-year-old daughter showed up from a sleepover. I showed her the skirt I purchased recently and a top and asked her if she wanted to be photographed. At first, she was reluctant to do it but then she agreed. After I photographed her mother for the professional headshot.
After I photographed her mother for the professional headshot. We got her dressed and did her hair and used flowers from a bouquet that my in-laws gave me for my birthday. My background was away from the sun facing my white garage doors. It helped me to get that beautiful bounce light that didn’t create shadows. I was there with my camera for a couple of hours and definitely got my first face tan of this season.
Photographing teenagers around ages 12- 15 is really hard. The majority of them are still shy, very private, closed in, it’s hard to make any jokes with them because they give you minimal reaction. I definitely think the best way to photograph this age group is just having them sit in one spot and not even ask them to smile. Braces also always the issue and it kids tend to give you a weird smile because they hate to show their metal teeth. So for this age group is all about the outfit and background. The surrounding has to be great, it helps the subject to look stunning. The outfits have to accommodate their skin tone to bring that great, youthful skin and they just look like perfect dolls. So for a shoot like that, I would recommend doing somewhat a princess theme or definitely more conservative, beautiful, light dresses or skirts in more neutral tones.
